21 August 2024: Meet Alun Kimber, One Of Pecten's Senior Consultants

Meet Alun Kimber, one of Pecten’s experienced consultants, with expertise in steering teams to solve challenges in multi-faceted and complex stakeholder environments.

Alun, who is based near London, is co-lead of Pecten’s Opportunity Framing Practice.

Alun says: ‘My reputation is one of providing pragmatic solutions to problems, delivering on promises, and driving change, whilst taking stakeholders enthusiastically along with me, and ensuring that the success is as much theirs as mine. I use my strong facilitation skills, as well as my ability to cat-herd technical, commercial and business people!’

He adds: ‘Opportunity Framing is a great tool to give your team complete insight and understanding around everything that a project, development, venture or change is about, as well as alignment on what success looks like and how the team is going to get there. Even if the first issue to be solved is agreeing what to disagree on! Call Pecten to help with that.’

Alun has almost 40 years experience, first with BP in the North Sea and then with Shell worldwide, working mainly in the upstream energy sector and more recently in the renewables sector. He started in technical roles, including managing a team of course directors in Shell’s corporate Learning Centre, then as a business consultant and then in integration roles, many of which were supporting non-operated ventures as well as secondment into joint ventures.

7 August 2024: Meet Martijn Hooimeijer, One Of Pecten's Senior Consultants

Meet Martijn Hooimeijer, one of Pecten’s senior consultants who has expertise in Production Engineering

Martijn, who is based in The Netherlands, has been working in The Philippines for Pecten, supporting Prime Energy’s Malampaya project, to improve reliability and implement a proactive technical monitoring system.

Martijn commented: “Malampaya is a late-life asset, and the organisation needs to transition to a more focused and lean operation. This requires a rigorous review of all activities and eliminate those that do not contribute to production, safety, and reduce costs where possible”.

As part of the project, Martijn has been holding bad actor / RCM (Reliability Centred Maintenance) workshops to investigate and eliminate trip initiators for critical equipment by identifying key failure modes. He has also been identifying parts of the assets that are being over maintained and where maintenance-by-exception strategy can be applied, reducing maintenance costs. All this will be combined into a proactive monitoring dashboard.

Martijn says he has also taken the opportunities available outside of the project:

“Social life is good as the people in the office are very welcoming and supportive. I have joined the office badminton group, and at the weekends, I take the opportunity to explore the Philippines”.

Martijn has over twenty years of global experience in the energy sector and specialises in Production Engineering, WFRM and operating emission reductions.

24 July 2024: Meet Olav Skar, one of Pecten's senior consultants

Meet Olav Skar, one of Pecten’s senior consultants with expertise in Safety, Wells and Leadership.

Olav, who is based in Dubai, was recently in The Philippines for Pecten, as part of the Project Execution Readiness (PER) Review team for Prime Energy.

The PER provided independent assurance of execution readiness in support of a Final Investment Decision (FID) for the major deepwater Sinagtala Project.

Olav worked with our other consultants, Ian, Patrick, Sana, Rajesh (and Soren), and Olav, reviewing the HSSE aspects of the project.

Olav remarked on the preparation needed given the multinational members of the team who had not previously worked together and their cultural and communications preferences, but also the need to understand the country, industry and company specific context, past, present and future. And the project specifics and challenges.

“We aimed to add value through a primary lens of simplification rather than paper compliance and adding complexity” Olav explained.

He summarised his experiences: “Having been central in driving industry-wide improvements through my previous role as Director as the IOGP (The International Association of Oil & Gas Producers), it was great to see the many steps made in Prime Energy. Their curiosity is awesome! I hope to have left some actionable experience behind and came away with many new insights, so it’s a win-win for all parties. We believe the result was a success and are delighted to wish Prime Energy the best of luck with the next phases of their activities “.

Olav has over thirty years of global experience in the energy sector. He prides himself on providing authentic leadership supported by deep technical, operational, HSSE, oil and gas/wells business, regulatory and learning/development expertise.

𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗥𝗼𝗯 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗲𝗺𝗲, 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗻’𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀. Rob’s key areas of expertise are Project Delivery Assurance, Value Assurance Reviews (VARs), Quality Assurance and Risk Management.

𝗥𝗼𝗯’𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲
Rob has over thirty years of project experience working as a Programme Manager in Shell before becoming a consultant, and since then has done major, multi-year projects for companies such as Philips and Akzo-Nobel.

𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗣𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗙𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀
Currently, Rob is helping develop Pecten’s project delivery assurance practice and consultant community, thereby building on his consultancy to traditional energy and non-energy companies over the last ten years and extending this to emerging energy transition companies and projects.

As Rob explains: ‘When a client project fails to make sufficient progress or is otherwise in trouble, we propose a tailor-made intervention to bring the project back on track. Our approach (with 1 or 2 consultants) can range from a few weeks executing a VAR. to coaching for project delivery success for the remainder of the project’.

‘As an example, I was pleased when my interventions through a VAR and the follow-up led to the success for a business change & IT project for a multinational chemicals company, saving several millions of euros of avoidable costs’.

𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴

”We loved picturing mushrooms in the woods and seeing what they look like close up” was the typical kid’s quote when engaging primary schoolchildren to develop a passion for nature through the nature & photography workshops we run in our spare time’.
